Pol Roger
2000 Rose Extra Cuvee de Reserve
$125.99
Parker 88 “The estate’s 2000 Brut Extra Cuvee de Reserve Rose is a fairly straightforward wine with clean aromatics and pretty fruit, but the wine doesn’t have the distinctiveness and personality I had hoped for, most of which is probably attributable to a challenging growing season. Pol Roger’s Rose is 50% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 15% still Pinot Noir. This bottle was disgorged January 10th, 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2012.”
WS 91 “Elegance defines this Champagne, whose berry flavors and silky texture combine for a harmonious whole. Citrus and mineral round out the flavor spectrum, and this glides to a long, chalky finish. Best from 2010 through 2022. 400 cases imported.”
The Pol Roger Brut Rosé 2000 is made from about 50% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 15% Vin Rouge de Champagne, sourced from approximately 20 Grand and Premier Cru Vineyards, including Le Mesnil, Oger, Vertus, Grauves, Oiry and Chouilly, and Cumières, Champillon, Ay, Hautvillers, Mareuil, Chigny, Rilly, Bouzy and Vinay, for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir respectively. Made in limited production, the Brut Rosé 1999 was aged for 7 years in Pol Roger’s deep, cool cellars prior to release.
2000 Harvest Notes:
The 2000 harvest carried on where 1999 left off: hot, rainy and little sunshine. Winter, spring and autumn were all characterized by warm temperatures. The total days of frost were much lower than normal. There were no winter or spring frosts: good news for winegrowers. The growing season was chaotic, crowned by a chilly July, very wet and grey, leaving us with the memory of a dismal summer. The growers contended with mildew, grape berry moths, and accidental yellows linked to a herbicide. 2000 was one of the worst years on record for hail: 13,000 hectares in 114 communes were affected, and 2,900 hectares were totally destroyed by ceaseless thunderstorms from budbreak through to the eve of harvest.
Leading up to harvest, good weather returned, helping to ripen an abundant harvest, despite some leaves having been affected by mildew. In the second week of September, huge, ripe bunches were harvested with very good health. The Chardonnay grapes showed seductive, fresh and well-balanced characters, while Pinot Noir showed powerful, full and structured. Fruit from the Côtes des Bar parcels was ripe, expressive and balanced delicacy and structure. Pinot Meunier was generous, unctuous, round and very fine. The 2000 champagnes show good volume and roundness in the mouth. While the 2000 wines are maturing relatively quickly, this vintage will be one for the long term.
Tasting Notes: An intense golden pink color, the powerful, concentrated nose shows ripe wild strawberry and raspberry. The wine has a lively, refreshing and light character on the palate, with dried apricot and mint notes. A lifting acidity precedes a long finish, which bodes well for the wine’s aging ability and its facility to pair with food.
Food Match: sushi, Soft cheeses, scallops, pate, oysters, lobster, Fresh Fruit, fowl, foie gras, crab, Asian cuisine. – From Frederick Wildman (the importer)
