Alexander Chartogne is a soft-spoken young man who has only recently taken the reigns at his family’s domaine. Yet beneath the shy exterior lies a thoughtful, passionate winemaker who shows much promise. This small, family-run estate in Merfy farms 12 hectares of vineyards planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier. The domaine’s vineyards encompass three distinct soil types: sand in the southern part of the village; then chalky terrains of various depths and lastly a clay and limestone mixture. Chartogne is gradually converting his vineyards to biodynamic farming.
