“No other house has a better record for producing vintage Champagne of great quality and exceptional longevity.”
– Tom Stevenson
Pol Roger is a Grande Marque Champagne. That doesn’t refer to its size or status, but rather to a group of producers who, at the turn of the century, established exacting quality controls for the meticulous, traditional methods of producing the finest Champagne. One of only a few Grande Marque Champagne houses still completely family owned and operated, Pol Roger was established in Epernay in 1849 by Pol Roger. After his death in 1899, his sons added their father’s first name to their last name, legally changing the family name to Pol-Roger. This is why the wine and brand names are not hyphenated, but the family name is.
Generations of the same families have worked at the same tasks for Pol Roger over the last century and a quarter. Sons have succeeded fathers as winemakers and remueurs. The Pol Roger family tradition dictates that the directors of the business know how to perform every single task involved in making and selling their Champagne. As a result, the production, cellar and winemaking staff all have an intertwined, multi-generational rapport.
The first market for Champagne, outside of France, was England. Exports began in 1876. In the early 1900s, Pol Roger became the favorite of royalty and connoisseurs. In fact, after Winston Churchill met the Pol-Roger family, they became lifelong friends. Churchill named his favorite race horse Pol Roger, and described 44 Avenue de Champagne (the Pol-Roger family’s home) as “The world’s most drinkable address.”
After Sir Winston’s death, black bands were wrapped around bottlenecks of Pol Roger Champagne as a gesture of honor. Later, the house further commended the great statesman by naming their luxury Champagne “Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill”. It’s a wine that certainly would make Sir Winston, a perfectionist, proud…as he once said, “My tastes are simple: I am easily satisfied with the best!” – From Frederick Wildman Site (the importer)
“Pol Roger is one of Champagne’s historic houses. I have long admired the estate’s Champagnes for their superb balance and gracefulness. This year I found the best wines at the bottom and top of the ranges, while the mid-level wines revealed some inconsistency, something that is not uncommon among properties of this size. The tete de cuvee, Sir Winston Churchill, named after the estate’s most famous customer, is often among the finest wines in the region. Lot numbers are stamped on the corks, but it would be nice to see Pol Roger indicate the disgorgement date on its labels.” – Robert Parker
