Chile was recently devastated with one of the largest earthquakes in recorded history. Currently the country is struggling to clean up and assess the damage. In a country where wine is the second largest industry, there was great concern over the financial loss due to the destruction. Some places received minimal damage, perhaps losing a single vat of wine while others are rumored to have lost 40 million liters of wine. Besides donating money to a trusted charity, one of the best ways to help rebuild Chile is to buy their wine. Help keep their vibrant industry alive!

Veramonte
Sauvignon Blanc 2009
Casablanc Valley, Chile
$8.99

This is one of my favorite Sauvignon Blancs in the store. Great acidity. Wonderfully approachable. Only $8.99. What else do you want?!?
They write “Fresh, crisp and intense. Citrus and tropical fruits deliver a mouthwatering tangy finish. Sip with salads, seafood, oysters and sushi.”

Estampa
Reserve 2007
Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc
Colchagua Valley, Chile
$12.99

Not quite tannic enough to be considered a baby Bordeaux but far more approachable than any 2007 Bordeaux. Estampa has taken the traditional Bordeaux grapes and blended them into an old world style with a new world twist.

Casa Lapostolle
Casa
Carmenere 2008
Rapel Valley
$11.99

The Lapostolle-Marnier family is arguably one of the best winemaking families in South Africa. Just ask Wine Spectator – They voted the Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta as number 1 wine for 2008. Not bad. I had the opportunity to enjoy an outstanding lunch on Monday with Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle who was truly delightful and not pretentious even though she has every right to be – She is the great granddaughter of the creator of Grand Marnier.

Veramonte
Primus 2006
Colchagua Valley, Chile
Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Carmenere
$17.99

This wine tastes like it is worth way more than $17.99. Bold, fruity, rich and brilliantly long finish.

Brigaldara
Valpolicella Classico 2007
$14.99
Parker 89
“The 2007 Valpolicella from Brigaldara is incredibly sexy juice. Medium to full in body, this voluptuous Valpolicella offers tons of dark fruit intermingled with scents of bittersweet chocolate, leather and spices in an utterly captivating glass of wine. I can’t think of too many wines that deliver this much sheer pleasure for the tariff. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012.”

This is one of the few family owned wineries left in Australia

Tyrrell’s Wines
Lost Block
Chardonnay
Australia 2008
$14.99

This is a clean and crisp chardonnay that is made for people who prefer white Burgundy over California chardonnay. For anyone wanting to experience an unoaked chardonnay, this is where you want to look!

Nineteen Seventy-Five
Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
$19.99

Made by the Tuck Beckstoffer wine company, this 2007 Cabernet is outstanding. Dark, ripe fruit that is perfectly balanced with strong tannins. This wine is begging for a steak dinner!

Chateau de La Greffiere 2008
Macon La Roche Vineuse
Vieilles Vignes
$14.99

This has a very floral nose of gardenia and nutmeg. The mouth is very juicy and fleshy. This creaminess is well balanced with typical Burgundian acidity.

Les Vignerons du Mont Ventoux
Altitude 500
Cotes du Ventoux 2007
$11.99

Bright and vibrant. Huge red fruit (raspberry and cherry) that adds a lovely round texture to this wine. When we tasted this a few weeks, it was competing with $50-$60 wines and this was the one that stuck with us.

Albarino is considered the perfect pair to shellfish.
Auratus
Albarino
Portugal 2007
$9.98

Fresh and crisp. This wine is made from 70+ year old vines in Portugal, which some would argue is the home to the oldest and best Albarino (Alvarinho).
The racing acidity pairs perfectly with the smell of peaches and almonds. Oysters anyone?

Deal on Fontodi, Atteca 2007 and the fun people at Yealands

February 8, 2010 Uncategorized

Here at Anlsey Wine, we have a soft spot for people who are unusual.  We enjoy people who march to their own beat.  We also love people who are environmentally friendly in their wine making practices.  Peter Yealands, of Yealands Winery, definitely fits the bill.   While his focus is not on organic methods, he has [...]
