Wine Enthusiast- 95- A tremendous Chardonnay. As always, the winery;s ’09 s bone dry, crisply acidic and minerally. You might call it austere at this point, with its tart finish of grapefruit. But a great Hanzell Chardonnay will improve for at least a decade, possible two, and this is a great Hanzell Chardonnay. The score reflects what the wine likely will be approximately eight years down the road.

Foxglove
Chardonnay 2009
Central Coast, California
$14.99
Parker 90 “This terrific portfolio of values is led by Foxglove’s remarkable 2009 Chardonnay, a non-oaked, stainless steel-fermented and aged white that sees no malolactic fermentation. Moreover, there are 30,000 cases of this beauty, a blend of two-thirds Santa Barbara County fruit and the rest from Paso Robles and further north in Monterey. It exhibits crisp honeyed lemon, citrus, poached pear, and honeysuckle notes intermixed with a hint of pineapple. However, it is the zesty acidity, stunning purity, and delightful balance this naked Chardonnay possesses that make it so appealing. Enjoy it over the next year.”

The Neely family owns Spring Ridge Vineyard, where brothers Jim and Bob Varner make their wines, and as well wines sold under the Neely label. The Neely wines are essentially selections culled from the same parcels that inform the Varner wines.

Holly’s Cuvee
$46.99
Parker 95 ” The 2009 Chardonnay Holly’s Cuvee is a striking wine endowed with layers of pure fruit. It shows gorgeous balance, class and sheer pedigree from start to finish. Holly’s Cuvee is a blend of the three parcels bottled separately under the Varner label (see my reviews in this issue.) Even though the blend is 71% Bee Block, 27% Amphitheater and 2% Home Block, it is the Amphitheater that comes through most in this terrific, multi-dimensional wine. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2019. ”
This is in house.
