The Fontodi pre-sell has been extended through next Tuesday, August 30.
Last time we sent this out, we only had the 2008 ratings but in the meantime, James Suckling (formerly of the Wine Spectator) has come out with some stellar ratings. Here is what he has to say about the 2008 vintage, “It seems to be the best ever. I spoke to the owner of Fontodi, Giovanni Manetti, and he said that they had bad flowering in 2008 so the grape yields were down. This accounts for some of the exceptional concentration…”
The wines that are included are -
-Chianti Classico 2008
-Pinot Nero 2008
-Chianti Classico Riserva Sorbo 2008

Fontodi 2008
Chianti Classico
750 ml (12-pack case) – $37.99
1.5 L (6-pack case) – $72.99
James Suckling 93 “This is a solid Chianti Classico, with beautiful plum, berry and milk chocolate aromas and flavors. Full body, with soft and velvety tannins and a long juicy finish. Really excellent. Fontodi is one of the stars of the region. Made from organic grapes.”
Fontodi 2008
Pinot Nero
750 ml (12-pack case) – $71.99
Parker 90 “The 2008 Pinot Nero Case Via shows good varietal character and inner perfume along with a lithe, mid-weight personality for this wine. Tuscan red cherries, spices, leather and wild herbs are some of the nuances that develop in the glass. The estate’s trademark finesse comes through in spades on the finish. This isn’t a blockbuster, but should drink nicely for at least the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2015.”
Fontodi 2008
Chianti Classico
Riserva Sorbo
750 ml (12-pack case) – $78.99
1.5 L (6-pack case) – $150.99
3 L (1-pack case) – $384.99
James Suckling 94 “My top wine in this report was from Fontodi, one of the to names in Tuscany. Located in the town of Panzano, Fontodi is best known for its Super Tuscan red called Flaccianello della Pieve, but its single vineyard Chianti Classico Vigna del Sorbo Riserva can be very close in quality. What I really liked in the 2008 was is velvety texture and beautiful richness. ”
Fontodi 2008
Flaccianello
750 ml (12-pack case) – $136.99
1.5 L (6-pack case) – $259.99
3 L (1-pack case) – $650.99
6 L (1-pack case) – $1430.99
James Suckling 97 “The pureness of fruit is so intense here. It’s also so clean and beautiful. The wine shows fabulous aromas of flowers, blueberries, and raspberries. It’s full-bodied, with chocolate, licorice, and plums. The texture is very velvety. This is a wine in near perfect proportions.”
Fontodi 1996
Flaccianello
750 ml (12-pack case) – $167.99
Tanzer 90 “Medium ruby-red. Perfumed aromas of cassis, black cherry, tobacco and woodsmoke. Penetrating, pungent flavors of cassis and blackberry; dense and delineated. Already offers lovely inner-mouth perfume. Finishes with substantial but supple tannins. A very strong effort for the year.”
Fontodi 2003
Vin Santo
375 ml (24-pack case) – $50.99
