Everyone is excited about the 2009 vintage in Burgundy; often times comparing it to the sought after 2002 vintage. The prices though are often out of reach. Think outside of the box and move south into Beaujolais where you can buy a well rated Cru for a fraction of the cost.
************Julienas************
The vineyards of Julienas are steep with good exposure. The soil is a mix of clay and limestone.

Parker 89 “Duboeuf’s 2009 Julienas Chateau des Capitains – from the upper reaches of its appellation – was, as usual, matured in small part in barrique. Boysenberry and cassis offer a seamless, engagingly, juicy, and less superficially sweet account of themselves than in the corresponding Seigneurie bottling. There is at most only a tiny bit of warmth in the finish, and that is more than offset by lip-smacking persistence of pure berry fruit and a shrimp shell-like sweet, saline savor. With the right richness of cuisine, this cool-weather cru should perform admirably.”
************Morgon************
The vineyards lie on red soils composed of granite and iron oxide known as the “rotten stone”

Parker 91 “Effusively and sweetly fruity as usual, the 2009 Morgon Jean Descombes (tasted from tank) is scented with creme de cassis, black raspberry preserves and pear liqueur; silkenly saturates the palate with rich yet infectiously juicy fruit concentrate; and introduces a saline note that along with its sense of juicy freshness makes for a stimulating finish. This perennially outstanding value will probably pick up more complexity over the next 12-18 months and be worth following for at least twice that long. (That said, in the form of La Chaponne and Mont Chavy, Jean Descombes has, for a change, got serious competition in this vintage from within the Duboeuf portfolio.)”
************Moulin-A-Vent************
“The King of Beaujolais”. It takes its name not from a village but from a windmill – one that was built high on a hill in the 15th Century and is a local landmark today. The soil is a homogenous pink granite striated with a manganese – bringing out great depth of color, floral aromas and flavor complexity.

Parker 88 “The Duboeuf 2009 Moulin-a-Vent betrays its small contingent of barrel in the nose as hints of resin and lanolin, along with cassis, dark cherry, violet, and sage. Suggestions of sage and cassis leaf along with the wine’s distinct salinity mark it as a bit reduced, but especially after administering a good shaking, this displays imposing amplitude and persistent dark fruit ripeness without either superficial sweetness or heat.”

Parker 88+ “The effects of extended maceration and maturation in one and two year old barrels is very evident in the 2009 Moulin-a-Vent Domaine des Rosiers – still in barrel when I tasted a pre-assemblage – which combines resin and vanilla with cassis and boysenberry; offers an almost thickly rich sense of concentration; and finishes with a bit of awkward roughness and persistent, slightly drying woodiness. That said, this is powerfully fruity and its notes of salt, iodine, and leather certainly lend a degree of complexity, and the wine seems more likely to in time slough off the effects of its wooden upbringing than do a couple of its fellow Duboeuf Moulin-a-Vents.”
