Is Kendall-Jackson going green?
Wine making is more often than not an environmental nightmare. There has been a very strong movement to “Green” the industry. Many places are looking towards integrating their grape growing and wine making with practices that are sustainable. Some are growing their grapes using organic methods while others are taking it a step further by actually making the wine organically.
Making the commitment towards Organic is a huge step and can be costly so many wineries are working towards finding sustainable ways help the Earth. Choosing to put a wine into a lighter container can help save in shipping cost but will also greatly reduce the carbon footprint. One of the biggest areas of waste is in water consumption and this is where Kendell Jackson comes into the picture. They have developed a system that will reduce their water wastage by 70% which will save them 6 million gallons of water a year! Essentially most of the water is lost during the rinsing of wine barrels, tanks and equipment and the new system will recycle this water as well as retain its heat. This will in turn save them 133,000 kWh of electricity a year and 73,000 therms of natural gas! According to their estimates, if 35% of California wineries use this process, they will save 1 billion gallons of water annually.
Thanks Kendall-Jackson for doing such a fantastic thing for our planet!
