Penfolds
Grange Shiras 2004
$405.99
Parker 99 “The 2004 vintage was outstanding in Barossa, McLaren Vale, and Magill, the regions where the grapes were sourced for the marvelous 2004 Grange. It contains 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged for 16 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it displays a superb nose of wood smoke, Asian spices, incense, game, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Medium to full-bodied, satin textured, with deeply layered, succulent blackberry, plum, and chocolate flavors, it has the structure and complexity to merit extended cellaring of a decade and more. The winery estimates a drinking curve of 2016 to 2050; I-d be a bit more conservative on the long end of the range. It will ultimately be seen as one of the great vintages of Grange”
Tanzer 98 “Bright violet. Jawdroppingly pure bouquet of blackberry, boysenberry, blackcurrant, kirsch, exotic tobacco, graphite and licorice, with a crystalline mineral tone running all the way through. Like liquid velvet in the mouth, showing a stunning melange of dark berry flavors that seem weightless but pack an amazing wallop of flavor. This is only 13.4% alcohol but has the impact of a 17% monster. Finishes on a delicate floral note-and then the blackberry, licorice and candied violet flavors snap back with a vengeance. The finish refuses to die. Penfolds claims that this is one of the oldest plots of cabernet sauvignon on earth, planted in the mid-1880s; the only other bottlings were in 1953 (as Grange Cabernet), 1961, 1963, 1964 and 1996. Remarkable for its concentration, elegance and balance and probably the greatest Australian wine I’ve been privileged to drink.”
Shiraz
RWT 2006
$152.99
Parker 95 “The 2006 RWT Shiraz was aged for 14 months in 70% new French oak hogsheads. The winery describes its style as opulent and fleshy compared to Grange-s muscular and assertive personality. Opaque purple in color, it offers aromas of Asian spices, beef juice, toast, blueberry, and licorice. Rich, fleshy, and round, it has plenty of underlying tannin, impeccable balance, and a long, pure finish. It will deliver prime drinking from 2014 to 2030.”
Cabernet Sauvignon
Bin 707 2006
$168.99
Parker 94 “The Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon was aged for 16 months in new American oak hogsheads. A glass-coating opaque purple, it displays aromas of pain grille, pencil lead, mulberry, spice box, and black currant. Medium to full-bodied and seriously structured, it has the fruit to complement its frame. On the palate, espresso and chocolate make an appearance along with layers of savory black fruits. Dense and exceptionally lengthy it will continue to unwind for another 6-8 years and drink well from 2015 to 2031.”
Chardonnay
Yattarna 2006
$121.99
Parker 93 “The 2006 Yattarna Chardonnay was sourced from Tasmania, Adelaide Hills, and Henty. It was barrel-fermented and aged on its lees for 9 months in 45% new French oak. It went through full malolactic fermentation and was bottled unfiltered. Light gold in color, it has an alluring bouquet of fresh baked biscotti, lemon curd, white peach, and mineral notes. On the palate it is still tightly wound although its richness and potential complexity are apparent. Creamy-textured and impeccably balanced, this lengthy effort will reward several years of cellaring and drink well for a decade thereafter.”
Tanzer 93 “Bright gold. Deep, pungent aromas of peach pit, pear, Meyer lemon, tarragon and smoky lees. Lithe and precise on the palate, offering penetrating citrus and orchard fruit flavors and smoky lees and herbal notes. The citrus quality returns on the finish, which leaves orange zest, mineral and anise notes in its wake. For a powerful, deeply concentrated wine this is extremely graceful.”
Shiraz
Bin 28
Kalimna 2006
$24.99
Tanzer 91 “Saturated ruby color. A seductive bouquet displays fresh red berry and candied cherry aromas, with complicating notes of vanilla, incense and tobacco. Lush, creamy raspberry and cassis flavors are firmed by dusty tannins and given spine by a zesty mineral quality. Becomes smokier and gamier on the finish, with the cherry and vanilla notes repeating. Nothing modern about this wine.”
Parker 90+ “The 2006 Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz was made primarily from Barossa Valley fruit. It was aged for 12 months in seasoned American oak hogsheads. Aromas of soy, pepper, lavender, blueberry, and licorice lead to a medium to full-bodied, fleshy wine with layers of spicy black fruit, enough structure to evolve for 4-6 years, and a lengthy finish. Drink this nicely priced wine from 2013 to 2021.”
Shiraz
Bin 128 2006
$24.99
Tanzer 90 “Vivid ruby color. Ripe cherry, plum and blueberry on the nose. Suave, sweet dark berry flavors are framed by velvety tannins and pick up bitter chocolate and coffee qualities with air. Oak-spiced dark berry notes cling on the finish, which is broad, sappy and very persistent. Give this wine some air or a few more years in the cellar.”
Parker 90 “The 2006 Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz is purple-colored with a nose of mineral, menthol, black pepper, and assorted black fruits. It exhibits some elegance, ripe fruit, and good balance leading to a silky, fruit-filled finish. Drink it from 2011 to 2018.”
