Paul Hobbs is a pioneer in fine wine production in Argentina, having started there in 1988 with Nicolas Catena. Senor Catena gives Hobbs much credit for the success of Catena-Zapata’s Chardonnay program. He has since extended his consulting efforts both in Argentina and Chile but the capstone of Hobbs’ work is Vina Cobos which began in 1998 and moved into its own winery facility in 2007.

WE 91 “Potent Malbec with aromas of leather, bacon, blackberry and smoke. It’s thick and dense, but well balanced, with flavors of blackberry,  cola, pepper and nutmeg. More smooth and easy than complex, with a long, creamy, sweet finish that cements the wine’s character. Probably the best Felino Malbec to date, and a good value at 20 bucks.”

Parker 92 “There is one white wine among their upper tier offerings, the 2009 Bramare Chardonnay Marchiori Vineyard. It was whole cluster pressed with a native ferment, barrel-fermented, and aged in barrel sur lie with batonnage for 10 months. Its nose displays toasty oak, butterscotch, and tropical notes leading to a rich, round, full-flavored Chardonnay that remains light on its feet, enlivened by vibrant natural acidity. Drink this outstanding effort over the next 4-5 years.”

2008 Rating – Parker 93 “The 2008 Bramare Malbec Lujan de Cuyo is purple/black with enticing scents of wood smoke, Asian spices, lavender, and assorted black fruits. It is sweeter, richer, and more structured than the Uco Valley cuvee. Packed with fruit, it merits cellaring for 2-3 years and will deliver prime drinking from 2012 to 2023.”

Parker 92 “The 2008 Bramare Cabernet Sauvignon Lujan de Cuyo is a glass-coating opaque purple color with an impressive nose of toast, mineral, espresso, violets, black currant, and blackberry. On the palate spice notes and chocolate flavors emerge for added complexity. The wine displays excellent volume, balance, and length and will provide pleasure over the next 8-10 years. ”

Parker 96 “The 2006 uNico Marchiori Vineyard is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Malbec. Opaque purple-colored, aromatically it has the complexity that a great vintage can provide. Notes of pain grille, crushed stone, lavender, black cherry, blackberry liqueur, and fruit compote are exquisite. On the palate, the wine is opulent, dense, intensely flavored, and lengthy. It will continue to evolve for another 4-6 years and offer prime drinking from 2013 to 2026.”
