This weekend we are taking a journey to Southern Italy.  Our first stop is in Salento which is at the very base of the heel of Italy in Puglia.

It is the start of Rose season and this is a fantastic place to begin.  Far more serious than your standard Provincial Rose this has a strong perfume of fruit and wild flower.  Very silky on the mouth.

We have been very excited about introducing everyone to Sicilian wines because they are elegant and delicate.  Honestly, they are often times very Burgundian in style.  The vineyards  are at the base of Mt. Etna.  The volcanic soil combined with the microclimates that surround this mountain have created wine that is has extraordinary structure and depth.

The two wines from Sicily we are featuring are from COS.  Here is a quote from one of the proprietors from COS – “At COS, we are not interested in representing our land by cabernet or merlot, but by grapes that, for centuries, have represented our territory. 60% Nero d’Avola, 40% Frappato
The Cerasuolo di Vittoria is a deep ruby red color. It has aromas of dried cherry, chocolate, smoke, herb and spice. It gains some licorice notes with time in the glass. Soft round fruity medium bodied palate with a good dose of acidity. The wines gives off dried cherry, truffle and smoky flavors in the mouth. Long finish.

Nero di Lupo
100% Nero d’Avola
Ruby red in color with garnet reflexes. On the nose, the wine has beautiful aromas of cherry, mature plum and licorice. The taste has good correspondence with the nose showing those same flavors of cherry and plum. The tannins are very soft and the wine has well-balanced acidity with a persistent finish.
