Gin
Gin is a very dry spirit made from grain and flavored with juniper berries. There are several distinct styles of gin, with the most common style today being London dry gin. Besides juniper berries, each producers accents their gin with a variety of botanicals including – lemon and bitter orange peel, as well as a subtle combination of other spices, including any of anise, angelica root and seed, orris root, licorice root, cinnamon, cubeb, savory, lime peel, grapefruit peel, dragon eye, saffron, baobab, frankincense, coriander, nutmeg and cassia bark.
There are 4 main types of Gin –
London Dry Gin – dominant English style of Gin. Excellent for mixing.
Plymouth Gin – Fuller bodied than London Dry gin. Fruity and aromatic. Only one distillery has the rights to the name Plymoth
Old Tom Gin – Lightly sweetend and reminiscent of the 18th century English gins.
Genever or Hollands – Dutch style of Gin made from malted grain mash. Oude Genever is the original style. It is sweet and aromatic. The Jonge Genever is drier and lighter. Typically lower proof than English gins.
