Thanksgiving is less than a week away and if you are like me, then you have planning your menu for months. It can be difficult to find a wine that is going to pair with turkey and all of flavorful sides. Wines with good acidity and a touch of sweetness are the perfect pair (Viognier, Riesling and Rose). If you prefer red, then a Pinot Noir is in order. These may not be what you normally buy but Thanksgiving is a great time to explore outside of the box. You will not be disappointed.
Here are our holiday recommendations
Melville
Verna’s Vineyard
Viognier
Central Coast, CA
$27.99
Tanzer 91 “Greenish yellow. Aromas of white peach and pear nectar, with lively spice and floral notes adding complexity. Nervy, focused orchard fruit and honeysuckle flavors pick up sappiness with air and show very good spicy lift. Clean and brisk on the finish, with the floral and spice notes repeating. Textbook viognier, and a very good value for the variety.”
Zind-Humbrecht 2009
Gewurztraminer
L170
Alsace, France
$24.99
WS 92 “Crackling acidity sets up this dry, aromatic version, with layered flavors of lychee, fleur de sel, orange peel and smoke, joined by a hint of cantaloupe. Finely meshed, building in intensity toward the minerally finish, with lots of lingering white pepper notes. The L170 in small print in the lower left corner of the label distinguishes this from the otherwise identical label of the L17M. Drink
now through 2024. 3,000 cases made.”
Domaine Houchart
Rose 2010
Cotes de Provence, France
$9.99
Blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvedre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah. Fresh and light with a very distinctive strawberry aroma. Crisp red fruits on the palate with a hint of citrus and floral notes.
Domaine du Vieux Chene
Viognier 2010
Rhone, France
$9.99
Light yellow straw colour with green glints. A fine aromatic wine with aromas of apricots and and freesia. Long and full on the mouth, awash with citrus and vanilla overtones.
Hugel & Fils
Gentil 2010
Alsace, France
$13.99
WS 87 “This light-bodied white is clean and minerally, displaying hints of stone, lemon zest and white peach. A racy wine, with a mouthwatering finish. Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat and Sylvaner. Drink now through 2012.”
Ponzi 2009
Pinot Noir
Willamette Valley, OR
$26.99
Tanzer 90 “Bright ruby. Sexy, highly perfumed aromas of black raspberry, rose and spicecake, with a smoky nuance that builds with air. Juicy red and dark berry flavors are nicely concentrated and supported by a spine of gentle acidity. The smoky note repeats on the sweet, dark berry-dominated finish. This will be drinkable soon and already shows well with decanting.”
