I had the opportunity to taste through eleven of the 2009 Girardins. A mixture of the VVs as well as 1er Crus and the lovely Echezeaux. All the wines were incredibly lush up front with gorgeous aromatics. These wines are drink now and for the next 10 years. But really. You can drink them now and swoon all the way till the end of the bottle. Classic, low in alcohol, with stunning varietal correctness and regional specificity. Girardin has decreased their negociant business and increased their quality. These are some of the best Girardin’s I have ever tasted. The vines for Girardin’s Vielle Vignes (VV) are over 50 years old – I find many of them to be excellent values.
These are all 12 bottle cases. This order is due this Friday, October 23, 2011. I highly recommend these wines overall – but especially if you’re looking for Burgundies that can be drunk young.
Dom. de la Chapelle 2009
Fleurie VV
A great knock off in Beaujolais for the Burgundy lover. A serious wine.
Dom. de la Tour du Bief 2009
Moulin au Vent
“Clos de la Tour”
WS 92 – Highly Recommended “Lush fruit flavors of blackberry and blueberry mix with a core of spice and dried herb notes in this fresh red, which is silky, with lightly chewy tannins, followed by lingering hints of dark chocolate and cardamom on the finish. Drink now through 2016. 1,000 cases imported.”
Dom de la Tour du Bief 2009
Moulin au Vent
“Les Hauts de La Rochelle”
Burghound 92* – Outstanding “This trades aromatic elegance for complexity because while the nose does not possess the same depth as the La Bernadine, it’s finer and while ripe, it’s not quite as ripe as there is none of the roasted meat character. The pure, intense and admirably concentrated flavors are reserved and less fleshy but I very much like the overall sense of depth and length. It is less immediate at present than its partner, indeed it’s even a bit austere, but at maturity it should ultimately deliver a slightly better drinking experience.”
***Domaine Vincent Girardin***
Chambolle Musigny Villages VV 2009
Bright on the palate with lively acidity. Quite elegant.
Chassagne Montrachet
Chaumees Blanc 1er Cru 2008
Burghound 91* – Outstanding “An expressive nose of very ripe orchard fruit with a hint of exoticism lurking in the background leads to rich and rather full-bodied flavors that are delicious though entirely serious as there is both excellent depth and length here. Lovely.”
Echezeaux
Grand Cru 2009
The only wine of the tasting that was not opened up on the nose or palate after 3 hours. Yet – a gorgeous wine full of depth and grace.
Gevrey Chambertin VV 2009
Meursault
Les Narvaux 2009
Pommard
Grand Epenots 1er Cru 2009
Pommard
Les Vignots Rouge 2009
Puligny Montrachet
Les Combettes 1er Cru 2008
Burghound 93* – Outstanding “A slighter riper if no more expressive nose features white flower, peach, pear and subtly spiced oak toast that precedes the rich, full and more powerful medium plus-bodied flavors that are underpinned by less obvious acidity on the clean, intense, textured and persistent finish. The differences in the two terroirs are really quite apparent as the Folatières is tighter and more mineral driven and the Combettes is richer, fatter and more powerful. While the wines offer a qualitative choice, they are quite different.”
Tanzer 93 “Bright, pale yellow. Sexy, expressive aromas of white peach, clove and menthol. Sweet, concentrated and fruit-driven, with excellent energy and a distinct old-viney intensity. A floral element adds lift and perfume to the middle palate. This rather powerful Combettes seems quite young today and in need of bottle aging. A superb showing. Made entirely from old vines, and with no rot here in 2008.”
Puligny Montrachet
Les Referts 1er Cru 2008
Puligny Montrachet VV 2009
Rully
Les Cloux 1er Cru 2009
Rully VV 2009
Santenay
Les Gravieres 1er Cru 2009
Pretty Pretty Pretty!
Savigny les Beaune
Serpentieres 1er Cru 2009
Savigny les Beaune VV 2009
Volnay
Santenots 1er Cru 2009
Tanzer 89 “Good red-ruby. Aromatic nose offers black cherry, violet and a hint of game. Supple and sweet, with good breadth to its black cherry and violet flavors. A bit youthfully aggressive but finishes with good sweetness.”
Volnay VV 2009
Classic Volnay nose with the palate to match. A killer value.
Vosne Romanee
Villages 2009
Pouilly Fuisse VV 2009
