John Duval was the principal winemaker at Penfolds Grange from 1986 to 2002. During that time he won Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition and saw Penfolds Grange named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator. In 2003 he started his own label.
The summer was torrid in Barossa in 2007. So, John Duval just took a page from his 16 years with the Penfolds Grange, and went to his Rolodex. Duval selected a handful of old vine Barossa Shiraz, each with sufficient root penetration to find water despite the arid heat. The result is a Duval masterwork, a Shiraz that received more, and more consistent journalistic praise than any similarly priced Shiraz in recent history.

Tanzer 93 “Inky ruby. Dark berries, iron, Asian spices and cracked pepper on the nose. Silky in texture, offering sweet blackcurrant and blueberry flavors and supple tannins. Turns livelier with air, taking a turn to zestier red fruits while retaining power. Strikingly pure and juicy, with excellent finishing clarity and a strong echo of raspberry fruit.”
Parker 93 “The purple-colored 2007 Entity Shiraz spent 17 months in 30% new French oak, the balance in seasoned French and American oak. It displays an alluring nose of wood smoke, game, meat blood, Asian spices, and blueberry. Ripe and sweetly-fruited, this plush effort conceals enough structure to evolve for another 2-3 years. Drink this classy offering from 2012 to 2022.”
